Southey Sings 70

In 2005 Southey Operatic Society celebrated their 70th anniversary.

Founded in 1935, Southey OS have performed many wonderful productions in the past 70 years and are still going strong. To celebrate they put together a concert made up of songs from shows the society have performed in that time.

Returning for the celebrations were a number of members who performed shows with us many years ago, but have since left the company.  For example ‘Brian Hurst’ who played Curly in the 1979 production ‘Oklahoma’ and hadn’t performed with SOS since 1983, joined us to sing along with Marjorie Lister who also had taken leading roles in the past such as Bloody Mary in the 1981 performance of the popular show ‘South Pacific’. As well as the current members of the society and the returning members, we were joined by a number of children performing favourites such as ‘Food Glorious Food’ from ‘Oliver!’, and ‘Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile’, from ‘Annie!’. This was an evening packed with song dance and nostalgia, including wonderful songs from such shows as Camelot, Fiddler on the Roof, Cupid and the Ogre.
